We had a great summer at The Shine Project with our Summer Sessions programme!
Here at Shine we know that school holidays can be long, and if you don’t have the opportunity to go away they can feel even longer. With not much to do, summer is also a time where young people are more at risk, so this year we ran our first full holiday programme, to give girls in South Leeds something more fun to do.
Each week we had a drop in at The Shine Nail Bar where we painted nails, made amazing milkshakes and smoothies, played games, watched films and generally just hung out. It was great to have so many girls from the local area drop in for a chat and we even managed to squeeze 18 of us into the nail bar for one of the sessions!
Each week we ran sports sessions trying our hand (and our feet!) at, boxing, netball, dance and rounders with a coach from Leeds City Council.
We also had a brilliant trip to Scarborough with a big group of girls, one of them going to the seaside for the very first time. She spent the whole day in the sea!
It was fab to see girls from all different aspects of Shine life interacting and getting to know each other. And we even got some British sunshine! All in all it was a fantastic summer, lots of fun and a great opportunity to connect with girls in the local area; some who we’ve known for ages, and new faces too. It’s been great to see so many of the girls we met over summer join our regular groups, and we’re already excited for more fun in Summer 2017!
