Happy Christmas from Shine!

We’re all just about to sign off for Christmas and until 2017 so reflecting on the fact that although 2016 has been a totally weird, worrying and pretty sad year on the whole, here at The Shine Project it has been a pretty good one and we are grateful for that.
We’ve done all sorts. Beach trips, lots of sport, run covered in colour and run for cancer, been inspired by Shulmans solicitors, joined Depuy on the last leg of their epic fundraising walk, been to WOW womens conference, had fancy nail techs come to the nail bar, run some ace Summer Sessions, done LOADS of baking, helped pack clothes for refugees, learnt about sweat shops, run stalls at galas, litter picked, run an outside hair salon, got covered in glitter (many times), learnt to skate and bmx at the Works, sledging at Xscape, cooking three course dinners, had loads of girls taking part in nail workshops and much much more! This is all alongside our regular weekly things which are the core of what we do, mentoring and supporting lots of girls on a one to one basis in local high schools and out in the community, running our girls courses now both in high schools and doing a bit of transition work at primary, our Tuesday groups, Cockburn afterschool club and our brand new South Leeds Academy tuesday lunch club which has been totally crazy but totally great (hanging out with over 50 girls in each Tuesday!). What a year.
As well as all this fun it has been a total privilege to get to journey with and support our Shine girls over 2016 through the inevitable ups and downs teenage girls face. It’s why we here, why we exist and it’s what we love doing. If you’re a Shine girl reading this, we think you’re amazing ? If you’re someone who supports our work, thank you so much, it makes a huge difference to many teenage girls and we appreciate it massively. So as we begin to approach 2017 we are looking forward to many more adventures, getting to know new girls, keeping in touch with the old ones and seeing many many more girls across south Leeds know they’re valuable and worth absolutely loads…

We hope everyone has a really happy christmas, well deserved rest and a peaceful new year.
