Before the summer I did my work experience at Shine and I have really enjoyed it! Not have I only done things in the office but I also got to see different parts of St Luke’s CARES such as the charity shop and the different groups. I think the charity shop was a good experience and was quite enjoyable but it has helped me realise that I would not like to work in the retail area of thing! I think this experience has been very helpful for me as it has allowed me to realise that there is a lot more to youth work than just planning events and sessions and that there is a lot of time and thought into what youth workers do and it is quite a difficult but enjoyable job. My favourite thing I did this week was the younger group summer party! We had a budget and had to buy everything we needed, make sure we had some fun games prepared and that everyone took part. I felt this helped my confidence as I have never met any of these girls but I had to chat to them and get them involved. We also have being going to a primary school out of south Leeds for transition sessions for Year 6 classes. This was a little bit of a new experience and I have really enjoyed getting to know the girls and teaching them. I feel like I have learnt a lot about myself over the week for example, we did team day where we found out our personality types and we were able to see who we were similar to and what our strengths are and then we had a fun game at laser zone which allowed us to engage in a team game and the teenagers beat the staff!!
